EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
