The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
