The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
